1st-gen Model Y introduced a dedicated EV architecture with large-scale gigacasting (front/rear depending on plant/year) to improve structural rigidity and manufacturing efficiency. It also brought a heat pump and integrated thermal management to improve efficiency and cold-weather range, plus frequent OTA software updates that enhance features, efficiency and driver-assistance behavior over time.

Dual-motor AWD (front induction / rear permanent-magnet variants vary by year/plant) with a single-speed reduction gear. Regenerative braking and integrated inverter/motor control are used, supported by heat-pump-based thermal management and battery preconditioning to improve real-world efficiency and charging performance.
