Gen 3 (964) brought major modernization: ABS and power steering became available, Tiptronic automatic was introduced, and the chassis was substantially reworked with rear coil-spring suspension for improved ride and handling; all-wheel drive also debuted on Carrera 4.

3.6L naturally aspirated flat-six (M64) with electronic fuel injection, paired with a 5-speed manual (optional 4-speed Tiptronic). Output is about 250 PS and 310 Nm for the rear-wheel-drive Carrera 2.
