1st-gen W205 moved to the new MRA rear-wheel-drive platform with weight reduction and higher body rigidity, added more advanced active safety and semi-autonomous driver aids (e.g., Distronic/steering assist), and upgraded infotainment and LED lighting.

C 220 d uses the 2.2L OM651 inline-4 turbo-diesel with high-pressure common-rail direct injection. In 2015 it commonly paired with the 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic (some markets later used 9G-TRONIC), delivering strong low-end torque and good efficiency.
