The 1st-gen AMG GT introduced an AMG-developed front-mid engine layout with an aluminum-intensive body, plus an electronically controlled limited-slip differential and (on some versions) active aerodynamics, improving rigidity, balance, and handling. The later facelift refreshed infotainment/driver assistance and equipment.

Powered by the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 M178 (hot-V layout) paired with a 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT dual-clutch transmission and rear-wheel drive; the GT S uses an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential.
