Gen 1 M2 (F87) strengthened the 2 Series chassis with M-tuned suspension/brakes and performance electronics; from the 2018 LCI period, the M2 Competition introduced the S55 engine with higher output and upgraded cooling/track capability.

HK-spec 2016–2019 F87 commonly uses a 3.0L turbo inline-six (N55) with 6MT or 7-speed M DCT, RWD; from the 2018 LCI period the M2 Competition switched to the twin-turbo S55 inline-six with 6MT or 7-speed M DCT, improving torque delivery and cooling for track use.
