The 1st-gen i8 introduced BMW’s LifeDrive carbon-fiber passenger cell with a plug-in hybrid eDrive layout and lightweight chassis. The 2018 facelift increased battery capacity and e-motor output, improving EV range and responsiveness, alongside infotainment and driver-assistance updates.

Plug-in hybrid AWD: a front-mounted e-motor paired with a rear 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine. The engine drives through a 6-speed automatic, while the front e-motor uses a 2-speed transmission. It supports EV-only and combined hybrid operation; from 2018 the system output rose to about 275 kW.
