The 1st-gen i3 introduced the lightweight LifeDrive architecture with a CFRP passenger cell and aluminium chassis. The 2018 facelift brought the 94Ah-era updates and revised equipment/software while keeping the rear-motor RWD layout for improved everyday usability.

Rear-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor driving the rear wheels via a single-speed reduction gear. The 94Ah-era setup peaks at about 125 kW with 250 Nm, using a high-voltage lithium-ion battery and regenerative braking; AC/DC charging availability depends on HK spec.
