The 1st-gen TT introduced a lightweight, rigid body; from 2000 it gained ESP and revised suspension/aero (rear spoiler) to improve high-speed stability and safety.

1.8L 20-valve turbo inline-4 with quattro AWD; HK cars commonly used a 6-speed manual or 6-speed Tiptronic automatic, with strong mid-range turbo torque.
